Adelaide Photographs

David Madley emailed me these pictures:-

He writes: "My grandfather became friends with Leo Villa and Donald when they were in South Australia.

It was kept at a workshop in Port Adelaide when it was in Adelaide, my Grandfather was the Manager.

2 photos are of the car, 1 is in the Mayne Nicklas workshop in Port Adelaide the other is with a crew on the back of the trailer.

The letter is from Leo to my Grandfather, Harold Stevens, His nick name was Steve. Leo Villa mentioned him in his book he wrote.

In the photos he is the one in the black suit on the trailer and kneeling on the left in the workshop photo, leo in in both as well. I do not know the others in the photos except the person on the left of my grandfather, in the other suit, He is Jim Patterson, he was a long time friend of my grandfather, he owned JP Engineering, that is probably where they did some major fabricating for the car and boat for repairs if needed. Can you help me with some of the others names." Click on for larger picture

Barmera photographs

Derek Sheppard sent me these pictures he writes:-

"While going through a photo album my mother recently prepared, I came across some black and white photos taken by my father in 1963?. Donald Cambell was in Barmera, South Australia, to conduct speed trials on Lake Bonney. My father ( an English engineer at Angove's winery) knew somebody that knew somebody, that enabled us to meet him and look over the Bluebird, I was allowed to go with Donald and two others, in a runabout, to inspect the lake's condition, for a possible speed attempt that day. From memory, he made a few attempts there, but later chose Lake Dumbleyung, much to the dissapointment of the Barmera townfolk. It was certainly a thrill for a nine year-old,one that I'll never forget, certainly an honour to be in the presence of a famous figure"

Andy Hollingbery has sent in these photographs of K7 at Ruislip lido from the Mid 50's. He writes do remember thinking it was a waste of time putting such a powerful boat on a small stretch of water like the Lido but then being very impressed by the noise when the throttles were opened (I’m sure only partially) and Bluebird surged forward!

Please note these pictures are subject to copyright, but hard copies may be purchased from Andy. He can be contacted via www.hollingbery.plus.com

Tomorrow's Salute

On January the 4th 1967 whilst trying to become the first person to go over 300Mph Donald Campbell's Bluebird crashed & disintegrated on Coniston Water. Early next day it was reported that a lone RAF Vulcan Bomber swept down the lake & dipped its wings in the classic salute to the fallen. The RAF denied it was "one of their's" and as no one else flew the magnificent Vulcan the story largely became part of the Bluebird legend, known only to a few. Thanks to research by Rob it now transpires that the salute was a personal tribute by one Don Dale, Vulcan Pilot with 12 Squadron. Having diverted from his flight plan to make the tribute he was in a certain amount of 'hot water' with his superiors in the RAF! All this he now confirms and he will be personally signing Rob Evans magnificent picture of Bluebird's heroic speed record attempt across Coniston with a ghostly Vulcan high above in readiness to make
